BBC WROTE ABOUT SERBIA AND BOYCIE! The British want to know why we have a soft spot for the legendary actor?
Recently deceased British actor John Challis, best known for his role of Boycie in the popular BBC sitcom "Only Fools and Horses" will get a street named after him in Belgrade. With this, there will always be a place in Belgrade carrying an echo of Peckham, the BBC wrote and added that this was announced by Belgrade's Deputy Mayor Goran Vesić.
- It's the only way to repay a man who loved our country and loved our city - said Vesic a few hours after the passing of the famous actor was announced. The exact location of the street has not yet been specified.
As the BBC wrote, the love affair was mutual. Only Fools and Horses" or "Mucke" as it is called locally still remains a cultural phenomenon in Serbia and other former Yugoslav republics. The show has constant reruns to this day and because of the subtitles used, everyone knows the English title and catchphrases.
Physical therapist Zeljko Djekic often used to greet me with the expression "lovely jubbly" at a clinic among the New Belgrade concrete blocks, which resemble the architecture of Peckham, where the show is set. This is just one of the reasons why the "fooleries" of the Trotter brothers are so loved and well accepted in Serbia.
- Only Fools and Horses is my childhood. There's still a framed poster of Del Boy, Rodney and Boycie in the bedroom my brother and I shared growing up. Del Boy is a dreamer and in Serbia, there are a lot of dreamers - Djekic said.
Following the passing of the actor behind the role of Boycie, many people in Belgrade felt a mixture of sadness and affection. One of them is Dragana Pavlovic who said for the BBC she was sorry to hear the news and that he had been an amazing actor and a great man.
The show's lasting popularity in this region sometimes comes as a surprise to its actors as well. As an example, Nicholas Lyndhurst, who played the role of Rodney Trotter, said that he "felt like the Queen" during his visit to Montenegro, because the guests of a restaurant stood up and greeted him with a round of applause.
However, Challis perhaps created the strongest connection out of all the cast.
His visits to Serbia last year lead to the filming of a documentary, "Boycie in Belgrade", which showed an enormous amount of people coming to greet him at his book signing.
He also raved about Serbia on his social media accounts.
Just before he passed away he received honorary Serbian citizenship, the BBC wrote.
